The Marshall House Hotel

Peeling back the 1960’s stucco curtain wall revealed history of another era and presented an opportunity to return this c. 1851 Greek Revival structure to its original stateliness and to its original use. Rehabilitation restored the property to a prominent 68 room full-service hotel with the charm and hospitality of a quality Savannah Inn. The original facade of Philadelphia pressed-brick was maintained and granite Greek Doric pilasters were replaced. The storefront was modified based on an 1880’s photograph of the hotel. Existing windows on the upper floors were restored, and wood blinds added to all windows. Exposed brick wall surfaces and heart-pine floors were maintained and the fabulous two-story iron veranda replaced. The restoration provided a catalyst for the resurgence and revitalization of Broughton Street, the main retail corridor running through the city’s Historic District.

Project received a Historic Preservation Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation, for “Quality Commercial Renovation/Restoration.” The Georgia Trust For Historic Preservation awarded the Preservation Award 2000 for “Rehabilitation of the Marshall House Hotel.”
