private residence: Historic district, Savannah, Georgia
This stately 1909 mansion has been restored and is located across from Forsyth Park in Savannah’s Historic District. The English Georgian Revival residence was expanded to provide a gourmet kitchen and family room. A basement level was re-configured for entertainment with a pecky cypress media room, mahogany paneled billiard room, a wine cellar with Savannah Grey Brick arches enclosing wine storage, a gymnasium and spa bath, and Jerusalem stone sculpture hall. The attic level was converted into a luxurious guest suite with a sitting room and small library.
A period style wrought iron railing and gates have been added to the existing brick and marble retaining wall to further define the character and privacy of an 18th Century mansion. An eight foot high solid brick garden wall en- closes a side garden, allowing for a 30’ swimming pool surrounded by an Italian garden with lemon trees, boxwood parterre, and red brick pathways with white marble coping.
This project received a Preservation Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation, an Architectural Excellence Award from the American Institute of Architects - Savannah Chapter, and an Excellence in Rehabilitation award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
